Van Cise Wins Fifth World Turkey Calling Championship, 12th Major

vanciseThe Matt Van Cise turkey callin’ train just keeps rollin’.

Fresh off his second consecutive triumph at the NWTF Grand Nationals, Van Cise won the 2013 World Turkey Calling Championship, held March 3 at Mack’s Prairie Wings in Stuttgart, Ark.

Van Cise, of Brookville, Pa., scored 570 in the finals to win the title. Billy Yargus took second, and 2012 World champion Sadler McGraw was third. Rounding out the top 10 were Josh Grossenbacher, fourth; three-time World champ Chris Parrish, fifth; Kirk Lewis, sixth; Scott Ellis, seventh; Clinton Phipps, eighth; and Steve Stoltz and Wayne Dozier tied for ninth.

The win marked Van Cise’s fifth World title. He also won in 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006. That ties him with the legendary Ben Rodgers Lee for the most individual World championships. Van Cise has also won four NWTF Grand Nationals Senior Division titles (considered the Super Bowl of turkey calling) and three U.S. Open titles, giving him an incredible 12 major calling contest victories since 2000.

A Facebook comment from competition caller Pat Strawser probably sums up Van Cise’s achievements: “I hope everyone appreciates what they are watching now. You are in the process of rewriting the history books.”

In other World contests held this past weekend, Steve Morgenstern of Kirksville, Mo., won the Friction title. Parrish and Rod Pettit triumphed in the Team division, and McGraw won the Locator division.
