I see new commercial boxes no longer need to be chalked. I make my own. What finish do they use to make them waterproof? — Jerry, via e-mail
Jerry, we took your question to a true authority: World and Grand Nationals calling champion Chris Parrish, of Knight & Hale, who makes his living building turkey calls. Here’s his reply.
“The box call surfaces (Jerry) is referring to is a special waterproof paint that has a semi-smooth surface and is totally waterproof. I feel it’s a great asset for the hardcore turkey hunter, as it keeps them from having to carry chalk, and he has a call that will work in any condition. I realize some hunters like the traditional chalk calls. I for one am partial to them as well, but for hunting, these new surfaces are the ticket.”
