Working Box Call Winner
Josh Shoemaker - Winner of the Readers' Choice Turkey Call Contest Josh Shoemaker, 16, comprises half of the father-and-son team of S.S. Custom Calls in Lebanon, Va. In addition to winning the Readers’ Choice first place, his call — a Cost-style hewn-out box made of walnut and Spanish cedar — also took second place in the Working Box Call category.

“I submitted this particular call because it has a very true hen sound, a great two-note yelp and is very user friendly,” Shoemaker said.

From the Judges
Brian Lovett, Editor of Turkey & Turkey Hunting Comments on Shoemaker's Winning Call“Josh Shoemaker’s box was the third call the judges ran during the contest. It immediately received a star next to its name. Judges and forum users probably agree that this call is pure turkey.”

Shoemaker only builds calls for competitions. He and his father, Al, have worked together about six days per week for more than two years.

My call-making philosophy is to never sell a call you wouldn’t take to the woods yourself, and to strive for a good nasally two-note yelp with nice rollover.”
