Since a #7 Hevi-Shot pellet is going to be deadly out to 40 yards and you're not going to be shooting any farther than 40 yards with a 20 gauge, why not go for all #7s?

My 870 youth 20 gauge with SSX choke and #7 Flite Control puts 164 pellets in a 12" circle at 38 yards. Here's the proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1mSs56HepQ

Obviously, you could use the Hevi13 but I think the Magnum Blends are super in the
20 gauge as well. Remember, this shot is DENSER than Lead thus it will hold it's
energy out to further distances.

There really is no point in this load.. The 7s are going to do most of the work and the 5s and 6s are taking up space that the lethal 7 pellets could use for even more pattern density.. The 5s and 6s provide additional penetration but do to the meager payload in the 20 pattern density will never hold up where the extra penetration of these larger pellets will be realized.. If you want to stick with Hevi 12 than by all means buy the straight 7s.. If you want a better penetrating pellet go with the Fed Heavyweight 1.5oz 7s.. The Fed 7s will out penetrate the Hevishot 6s and will be real close to the Hevi 5s..

The SSX is my favorite choke in the 20 gauge.. IME it is the most versatile 20g choke.. My gun with Hevi 7s will run 140-150 in a ten inch at a taped 40, 230s with Nitro Company Hevi 7s and here is a pattern with the SSX and the Fed Heavyweight 7s..

Fantastic patterns!! I agree as well about the versatility of the SSX 20 gauge choke. Several readers are reporting very similar results as yours with that choke & shell.

I have never seen anything PENETRATE like the Hevi13 or Magnum Blend shells. I am

The math does not lie.. Hevi 13 which now is only 12 g/cc is only 6% denser than lead whereas Fed HW at 15.2 g/cc is 34% denser than lead..

In 2010 I shot Hevi 7s out of the 20 gauge and in 2011 I shot Fed 7s.. After numerous redneck autopsies from 5-45 yards there is no comparison in penetration on birds.. While breasting birds with Hevi 7s many of the flyers can be found on the near side skin or just inside the breast.. With the Feds you never find one in the breast and if you happen to find one on the skin, you can trace its path through both breasts.

Federal has the densest, deepest penetrating pellets that have been ever commercially loaded in a shotshell.. They are really missing the boat with the increased penetration of their pellets by not loading a 7.5 or even 8 in their loadings.
