what will you do , come spring season

Postby mark hay » December 26th, 2008, 11:32 am

hey all
i just finished reading a post made last spring that stated the season ended with a heavy heart because on the last day of season a coyote ruined the hunt. my question to all is,come spring season if a coyote comes close enough to your setup that you can see it, what will you do?
will you sit still and hope for the best?
will you spook the dog away by moving or shouting or both?
will you shoot the coyote?

I've had yotes come into my spring turkey calling on 3 or 4 occasions. As I recall I don't think I was ever engaged with a gobbler or turkeys except one time and the birds were still pretty far off then.

I just enjoy them. Fur is no good anyways at that time of year.

hey fellers
considering the fact that the dog can hear as good as the turkey, and that it's either your calls or the birds your working on that has caused him to show up . i tend to think that if you let him walk, and no doubt at that point you'll stop calling for a while, the dog will pursue the real bird and thereby either spooking the birds or eating them.

I think I'd have to shoot the yote. I've never got one before

I've had that happen a few times but with only two opportunities for a shot. One got a face full on Win #5's and the other took a broadhead.

A few seasons ago I had a coyote come trotting into my decoy shortly after sunrise on a windy day. He got suspicious at about 30 yards and I unloaded into his face. He rolled over, got up and ran off like he'd never even been hit.

I thought the set-up was blown but it was too late to move, so I decided to get really aggressive. Surprisingly, a tom hit on my cutting and ending up coming in and did not survive a 30 yard shot of his own.

Time and time again, I see evidence that a shotgun blast means little to a turkey. I do not suggest that you shoot every coyote, but if you have decided they need to be thinned, I would not hesitate.
