Mossberg 835 Aftermarket Chokes

I have a 835 that I purchased 11 years ago, currently I use the factory turkey choke using Winchester Supremes High Velocity #5 in 3.5" with good results. I think I could and would get better performance with a aftermarket choke, I'm looking at the Indian Creek (.675) and the KICKS (.680). Does anyone here have the 835 using either one of these aftermarket chokes, and if so what ammo do you use and what pattern are you getting?

I have a Mossberg SSI-ONE with a 24" barrel. It has the same i.d. barrel  as the 835/935.  I'm using an SSX with an e.d. of .670 and 3" Hevi-13 "Bronze" shells with 2 oz. of #6 shot, for one of my hunts this year.

I put an inexpensive Simmons Pro-Diamond fixed 4 power scope on it and patterned it from 20 yards out to 40 yards. It's getting good even patterns at all ranges, with very impressive numbers as well.

I've had this gun for several years and really like it because it's very light and easy to carry in the turkey woods. I was never really satisfied with the patterns however, until I started using the SSX Turkey Choke. I'd tried a number of chokes with it and several e.d.'s but none worked until I went to the .670.

I got it out this year to try with some of the "Bronze" shells and also the 3" Winchester Xtended Range Hi-Density shells with 1.75 oz. of #6 shot. It's kind of a toss up but I think it shoots the "Bronze" shells just a bit better.

I don't know what the barrel length of your 835 is but I'm very pleased with the performance of this combination in this very short barreled gun. That .670 e.d. seems to be the right one for that barrel.

I shoot a 1992 835 w/ 24" non-ported barrel.  The after market choke I use is a Clearview Products, Inc ported turkey choke (0.718").  They are loacted in Oklahoma City.  his is a custom choke that Larry Nailon makes based on a bore diameter measurement taken just before the choke.  I believe the cost is still $55 and takes around 4 weeks to get.
 
With this choke I have had great results with many shells on the market.  Currently, I'm using the 3.5" Federal HW 1-7/8oz #6 load.  @ 40yds, this shell is giving me around 130 in a 10" circle (41.6% of payload), 208 (66.7%) in a 15" and 260 (83.3%) in a 20".  It will place 98% of the payload in a 30" circle at 40yds.  Granted it is not doing the high pellet counts that you see with Nitro shells, but it only has 312 pellets in the shell.  However, I like a bigger pattern for hunting than other hunter.
 
Other shells that have worked well are:
 
3" XRHD 1.75oz #6
3" Fed FC wad 2oz #4 (lead (Pb) load)
3" Old Fed Premium Mag 2oz #4 and/ or #5 Pb load
3" XRHD 1.75oz #4
 
As for Mossberg factory chokes, I also use the flush Full choke (0.710").  It is marked "2 & BB Steel-all lead".

I purchased the Mossberg 835 like 11 years ago, I use it for turkey hunting only, and been succesful with it, and it never gave me a problem. Currently I'm using the factory turkey choke (.695) along with Winchester Supreme High Velocity 2oz. #5 with decent results, the barrel has a white bead sight, there is always room for improvment.

So, not long ago I saw a new Mossberg 835 in the gun shop, and I liked the fiber optic sights on it, I called Mossberg they are sending me the front and rear sights FREE. I have been doing alot of research on turkey chokes, and there are many aftermarket ones out there, and after a few weeks of researching I just purchased a INDIAN CREEK turkey choke (.675), they informed me to try HeviShot turkey ammo, 3.5", 2-1/4oz., #5 or #6 shot. During my research and speaking with others they agree that they are getting great results with this choke/ammo combo, at 40 yards in 10" circle I should get 92%-95% of the pellets in there, that to me would be a 60 yard kill radius. So next week I should have the new sights and the choke tube, then during late spring or early summer I will pattern it.

IC makes a good choke.  Personally, I believe 0.675" choke in a 835 is extremely tight.  But that just my opinion.  As for getting 92-95% of the pellets in a 10" circle at 40yds.........not going to happen. The Hevi 2.25oz #6 shell contains around 475 pellets.  92% in a 10" circle is 437 pellets! 

Only shell that I've seen do over 400 is a Nitro 2-7/16oz straight Hevi #7 's.  But that shell is approaching 1000 pellets to it's payload.

I have a 835 that i won at a NWTF banquit in 1997 so about the the sameas you got yours..mine is set up the same way with 675 and great turkey KILLER..zipperman
