Never too late for Thanksgiving dinner

Got lucky the day after Thanksgiving here in PA!...Got on a small family flock right @ flydown. Snuck up ahead of them & got in position for a scatter. I let them get as close as possible (30-40 yds) & made a mad dash @ them. I wasn't real satisfied with the scatter, but I did manage to get a few to split from the majority of the birds. I walked back up to gather my gun, binocs & vest that I ditched before attempting the break. I waited for them to start calling & it wasn't 20 min. before I heard one kee-keeing!! I got set up & 30 min. after the scatter, I was standing on this jakes neck!

I have been fall hunting 1 time. I have a question for you and I am not trying to bea smart***. If you have the flock within 30 to 40 yards why bust them up? This is something I do not understand about fall season. In other words when and why is a bust the right thing to do?

yeah at 30-40 yards im bust n the turkey in the head not bust n the flock of turkeys to scatter & re-call them back again!!!??? nice a jake with a full fan a??? super jake???

That's a question I sometimes ask myself! (especially when things don't work out with calling them back) But I guess it's just a matter of personal preference or tradition. I'm not sure...I just like to call them in! (I won't kill one that I don't call in) For me, a bust is almost always the right thing to do! Not only because I like the challenge of calling them back, but also for the added chance of one of my hunting buddies joining in on the break!

There's nothing wrong with shooting one if you get a chance. I just like the challenge of calling them back in! (I won't kill one unless I call it in...that's all) As for the jake I killed, I actually think it was a late jake not a super jake. It's middle tail feathers hadn't had a chance to get "high in the middle" yet after the moult.
