I was contemplating my season so far and past fall seasons and it dawned on me I have heard and observed a lot of fighting and sparring in the fall. It's not just gobblers, but hens and poults squabble more than the old long beards. Just last Sunday I watched a flock smack down. Then Wednesday I had a lone hen answer my yelps. she drifted in and out but never got close. Finally I gave her a sharp purr and here she came. She ended up staring me down at 15 yards. I don't make the purrs as hard and loud as a spring fighting purr between gobblers. I just make it sharp and only do one or two purrs kind of spaced out. Not the raucous repeated purrs of a spring gobbler fight. The old hens will come to it and bring their entourage. Poult jakes are particular aggressive and vulnerable to purrs...so don't forget the purr as a fall call.
