MN spring turkey harvest down 25% from 2010

Postby dewey » June 30th, 2011, 10:54 am

Here is an exceprt from the MN DNR 2011 spring turkey harvest report.

During 2011, 54,042 applicants were issued 43,521 permits (Table 1, Figure 2), including 21,754 general lottery permits, 1,629 landowner permits, 8,693 youth permits, and 11,324 surplus permits. An additional 2,462 permits were issued to archers, and 121 permits were issued for the Camp Ripley disabled veterans hunt. Hunters registered 10,055 turkeys, a decrease of 25% from 2010 (Table 1, Figure 2).

Here is the link to the report.

A couple of interesting numbers to me are the following.
# of applicants 2010 - 51,312 2011 - 54,042
# of permits issued 2010 - 46,548 2011 - 43,521
# of registered birds 2010 - 13,467 2011 - 10,055

The success per time period was down for all 8 time periods. I think the larger decrease in MN turkey harvest versus WI is that we have less suicidal gobblers here in MN, had to get a shot in vs WI[:D]

MN turkey harvest versus WI is that we have less suicidal gobblers here in MN, had to get a shot in vs WI

Of course we have suicidal gobblers over here look at how some of the WI hunters dress for the hunt!  WDNR genetically altered them years ago in order for Cheesehead success. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

OK I confess this is Steve Hickoff hope he doesn't get too mad at me for posting this pic.  He did write the best fall hunting turkey book ever - Fall & Winter Turkey Hunter's Handbook.

Yeah,I expected harvest to be down with as cruddy as the weather was here most of the spring.  Unfortunatly I can access the link since our state government is too busy acting like a bunch of children...
