Snapping Turtle Traps!!!

Anyone here like to eat mud turtles!If so I have a tried and true trap to clean the ponds and fill your freezers.I usually start turtle trapping in July,seems the turtles are the most active in the hottest times of the year.Easy to build trap I use 2" squared wolve wire.Aproximate demensions 36"x16"x16".In the front of the trap only go 8" with the wire down the front of the face.The other 8" has a piece of netting like volley ball net attached completly around the entrance.You want enouph net to go at least half way in the trap.I cut a 4" square in the back of the trap to drop my bait in.I use canned salmon,and it seems to work great.The turtles think they are pushing threw weeds when they are going threw the netting and they can't push there way back out.Stake it down with a stiff branch and leave the top of the trap out of water for the turtles to breathe.It'll take ya a couple days to catch every turtle in the pond.I always leave atleast one turtle in the trap when I collect em in the mornings.Seems the turtles are breeding this time of year,and they go in the trap better with company in it.

I tip my hat to you Shane. I cant get past the smell of them. I caught two for a guy that wanted some. After a couple of miles down the road I had to throw them out because they stunk to high heaven. But I have heard they are good to eat thou.

reminds me of a conversation w/ a guy i used to work w/ from w.va, we were talkin about pigs feet, someone asked what they taste like, he says..........." they taste like ears " !!!.......wt*

You gotta let the turtles (season) Bryan.Put em in a barrell for several days in clean water and the smell leaves them completely.You fellas don't know what your missing!!!!!!![;)]

Shane, a buddy of mine loves them. He told me the next time he fixes some up that he would let me know and I will try it.

David, if you take some hog brains and mix them in with scrabbled eggs...boy talk about good eat'n. Know one thing you have to try is cracklins and I don't mean the cheap store bought crap either. I gaurantee you will like them, you can eat them plain or mix them in with cornbread mix and cook it and thats really good.....Incase you don't know cracklins is. It is what is left over when you cut the skin and outer fat off the pig and cook down to make lard.

Dont ever knock something until you try it.
