Of course, you turkey killers out there know what I did. Let a longbeard walk? Never.
I shot the strutter at 25 steps and then apologized up and down to my buddy.
"Heck, I was wondering when you were going to shoot," he said.
His understanding made me feel better, and I vowed that we'd get on a turkey that afternoon.
And do you know what? We did. In fact, my friend shot a Rio Grande with spurs just shy of 2 inches.
Maybe he'd known something I hadn't.
