well the second part of the fall season is here. anyone goin out or get anything? im goin out for turkey and for the bow deer season. stories, pics, and snowy tactics would be nice [:D]

On Monday last week had a flock of 50+ turkeys break up and came charging back into this orange vested hunter to regroup; when the smoke cleared 2 lay still on the glistening snow with feathers rippling in the breeze.
Nice way to open second turkey season.

haha congrats. im glad u had a good start. i went out a couple of times but the turkeys jsut dont seem to be in my part of the woods during the fall. i got a hen in the first part of the season but nothin yet on the second. i gotta work this weekend so maybe after that? wish me luck... im gonna need it

Sometimes a hunter gets lucky; or is it the harder he hunts the luckier he gets?  Not sure, but hunting as much as possible can't hurt.
The turkeys in my area have been scarce this year in the valleys I hunt.  During all the flood rains many I found many drowned poults not sure the affect of those rains on the total population.  Since WDNR does not actively manage or count turkeys they could not answer my question.  My hope is the hens renested which accounted for the very small poults I encountered in the early fall.
Usually I see flocks numbering the 100's where as this year the flocks are smaller in the 30-50 range.
Still plenty of birds.
Orange clothing is a serious disadvantage for turkey hunting.  This weekend is the last of the gun deer seasons; good riddance, no deer hunters are out anyway.  Apparently too cold for those tenderfoots. [;)]
A few mornings ago it was -4 the coldest hunt so far for me. Turkeys did not come off roost until 10 but then I had to get to work.[:@]
You asked for tactics; not sure where to start there. Let me know your questions.  Last season was my first experience winter turkey hunting and did really well.
Steve Hickoff's Fall and Winter Turkey Hunter's Handbook got me to understand what it takes to kill a fall / winter turkey on purpose rather than opportunistically as I did before.

I like those pics too. but when you have snowshoes out with you, dont they get in the way? theyre kinda big and clunky

Snowshoes are the mode of transportation.  The turkeys here are flocked up well off the roads the snowshoes make walking back in to them easier. Not easy just easier than without them.  I take them off when setup and use them to put my calls on thus keeping the calls snow free.
2 feet of snow fell here over the weekend with the 40+ winds there are drifts 6-10 feet high; snowshoes are a must in order to travel over this much snow.
