In "Decision Time," Editor Brian Lovett shares a scenario from his 20-plus years hunting turkeys. Each hinges on a critical decision. Post what choice you would have made, and then see how things actually turned out.
Conclusion: Loan Star
There was no sense denying it: We had to change gears.
So we grabbed the blind and set up at the wide flat, which was joined by a creek bottom and a mesquite-covered expanse. For an hour, we waited and called. Then we waited and called another hour. Then we just waited.
But do you know what? During that third hour, three silent 2-year-olds popped onto the flat and walked within 25 steps of the blind. I shot one, and we breathed a sigh of relief. The sit-and-wait tactic had produced.
After taking pictures, we longed to stretch our legs, so we hit another spot for one last Texas walk-and-call session. Guess what? We killed another one in quick fashion.
Maybe waiting patiently had been the right strategy, or perhaps cutting and running would have produced anyway. Or maybe it just helps to hunt Texas.
What decision did you make?
