An awesome adventure in 2010

Postby cuttnrun1187 » June 7th, 2010, 10:20 am

Wow what a 2010 season! I was able to be a part of 7 kills this season which is the most in a single season for me. My 12 year old nephew started it off on MD's youth hunt April 17th with his first ever bird. Then my cousin and I killed 3 turkeys each and were together for all 6. If I had to pick a favorite hunt of the season it would have to be the youth hunt with my nephew. (Story is in the "Official Thread: My first Turkey") Here are some pics from the season. Enjoy!!!
First one is of my nephew's bird.
Second one is opening day in PA with my cousin and the birds we took early in the morning.

PA mature bird had a 9 3/4" beard and 1" spurs. Was heavy in the weight depart too but we didn't weigh him. :-(
We were working 3 other birds when he came in off to the side of us silent. We first heard him spit and drum a few times and then gobble after I softly clucked at him. Came right in for a 25 yrd shot for my cousin.
Turns out the 3 other birds ended up being all jakes and they came in about 10 mins after the shot. Went right to the dead gobbler and flogged him some more, pecked his head and just thought they had whipped up on him. Little did they know. I was not going to shoot but after a 30 min show of gobbling and pecking and flogging the other bird, I knew my cousin would be highly upset if I didn't. Mind you he got to see most of this from within 25 yards, as they kept circling his bird laying there. Oh for a video camera. They turned and walked off about 50 or 60 yards three times and came back before I could finally get a shot at them. Turns out our setup had my cousin between me and the birds. They finally went to skirt around him and that gave me the clear shot.

Next pictures are a MD bird I killed and the PA bird my cousin killed the same day.
Mine was @ 6:30 AM and after we took care of business with him we went to my cousin's home state of PA and found his @ 10:30 AM.
MD bird had a 10" beard and 1" spurs, weighed 21 lbs.
PA bird had a 9 1/2" beard and 7/8" spurs, didn't get the weight but would have thought it to be around 18 lbs.

And finally the double we had in MD and a cell phone pic from the set-up with B-Mobile.
These 2 came in silent until they were about 50 yards behind us. I had been doing some soft yelping every couple of minutes and after about the third time, one of them cut loose behind us and just about rattled our teeth! [:D] A few more real soft clucks and they committed to coming around the blind and right to the decoys. A hen is positioned just out of camera view. Got this hunt on video with my cousins gun mount camera. We also have my other MD hunt and his PA bird on the same camera. Kinda neat to watch it happen.
Both birds had 9 1/2" beards and 7/8" spurs. Weighed approx. 18 lbs.
This setup is exactly the same spot as my first MD bird other than he came in directly in front of us.

Thanks Mark and Scott. I'm looking forward to hopefully be able to spend a little more time here this summer and talk all kinds of good turkey stuff.[:D]
