I have had a tough season with many ups and downs. I have had alot of fun and hunted alot! I just couldnt seem to catch a break. Well I finally got my break yesterday at about 6:00AM. I got into my area and I didnt hear anything at first. I decided to set up and see what would transpire. I set up next to a tree and made 2 soft yelps on my box call. The next thing I know the woods explodes with turkey sounds. Hens were cackling and yelping and then I heard the big booming gobble. I realized that this bird was with hens and I needed to get them to come to me first. It wasnt that difficult seeing that they were mad that "another hen" was in their area making noise. So i just mimmiced everything they did and the came right to me on a b-line. The only problem was they showed up right behind me. The lead hen got to about 10 yards and sensed something wasnt right. She flew and took her girlfriends with her. Lucky for me when I swung my old mossberg around the gobbler was still standing there wondering what happend..... Down he went and after a long and arduous season I had my first bird. He was 19 lbs 9 inch beard and sharp 7/8 spurs. I couldnt be happier!
