Filled my last tag!

Postby DBraman » May 1st, 2010, 6:47 am

A buddy and I went to a new place this morning about 30 miles west of where we normally hunt. At daylight, we didn't hear a thing so we just eased around listening. At 8:00 we heard a gobble around 500 yards from us. We moved as close as possible without being seen which put us about 200 yards from the bird. My buddy started calling softly to the bird which answered within seconds but wouldn't move. After about 20 minutes he switched to a different call and this seemed to make the bird head our way. He would walk about ten feet and stop to strutt. After forty minutes he had finally closed the gap to about 20 yards. Due to his gobbling and then drumming at such close range I was about to have a nervous breakdown. Finally he walked clear of some brush for a shot and I filled my last tag of the year at 10 yards. He weighed 19 pounds and had a 9 1/2 in beard. His spurs were 1" and 1 1/8"
