Very special set

Postby Kawboy888 » April 2nd, 2010, 10:54 pm

While hunting with a customer on the NY/PA border I met his neighbor that owns a cabin next door and comes down once in a while. We chatted about an old barn that was built in the early 1900's that belongs to his grandfather. He mentioned that he would really like a call made from the barn wood. Well, the barn was built out of hemlock, not a great wood for call making. I ended up making a slate over glass pot for him and his father, and a figured black walnut short box with hemlock sides. The calls sounded much better than I expected.

The box has a side that is raw, from the barn itself.

Nice reminder of what was.  It looks like the call will be around a lot longer than the barn.  I wonder what wood the timbers are?  My Grandfathers barn had walnut timbers sawed on site.
Steve, I love "smoked" turkey

Steve, the whole parn was made from Hemlock, which is a type of pine tree. So it was basically like taking a 2x4 from home depot and making calls. Way too soft for my liking when it comes to carving.
