Different Woods...

Postby Struttin Spurs » March 2nd, 2010, 7:00 pm

I was thinking about trying to make a few of my own box calls and was wondering which different types of woods I should try?

Cedar, Sassafras, Mahogany, Walnut, Purpleheart, Butternut, Cherry. All are very good woods for boxes. They can be mixed or all the same wood.

One of the woods I'm using right now is poplar, and it sounds pretty good.

Poplar is great for a box and I personally like a walnut paddle on it. I also like a walnut paddle on butternut, purple heart on on sassafrass, cedar, cherry, mahogany. I like walnut with a walnut paddle. Also I am fond of Osage Orange and catalpa, juniper for boxes. I stick to the rule that whatever paddle you use it should be at least as dense as the box it sets upon, and most generally a little denser.

GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS, AND STAY SAFE !
