Looks like the one in the pic is corn cobb and cedar. Cedar was a very common wood used for strikers back then. Hickory, Walnut, Cedar, Purpleheart, any hardwood dowel rod would work.

Scott summed it up you might even try getting a striker pack and work the end down on them,good luck with it I don't think it will be too critical as long as it is hardwood.
