The joy of victory....agony of filled tags

Postby eggshell » December 6th, 2009, 12:23 pm

I don't know whether to be happy or sad.....Joe and I went back to Ky for the second season today and killed two birds. Now all my gun tags are filled so I HAVE TO WAIT TILL SPRING! Unless I go back to Ky and try to fill my archery tags, but that didn't work out too well last time, aac.

We had a good day. We took Joe's dog and he got a bust on a gobbler group, but we couldn't work them back. Then we called in a flock and killed two out it, both Poults(1 male & one hen). It was good to have the dog, Joe's bird took off running crippled and the dog caught it, that was neat to watch. On the way out we busted another group and walked off and left 3 long beards and a group of young birds and hens. Joe was wishing big time he had passed the poult as he had a good chance at one of the long beards, but alas no tag. As for me I had filled my gobbler tag in the early season so a poult is what I wanted.

Fried turkey nuggets for supper tomorrow.

Thanks Mark. It's certainly been a year to remember!

Yes we hunted in some snow and it was indeed cool, but we both dressed about  4 layers deep and didn't sit for any extended periods. However the birds seemed pretty active.

Ky has treated you pretty good this year, and you are right it has been pretty cold this weekend.

Hey Dana,

Congratulations! It sounds like a great way to end a turkey season.

Thanks,
Clark

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. For those still hunting I wish you good hunting and success and for those waiting may God give us patience.

What a Year of Turkey Hunting:

Opening day in Ky = bagged a real nice gobbler, forgot scales, but sure he was in 22 # range
2nd day Ohio = My heaviest bird ever, 24#5oz
went back to Ky = bagged 22#14oz Gobbler
Back in Ohio finished off with a jake in 2nd week
October 1st decided to try my luck with crossbow in Ky = missed a long beard
October 5th= I was shot with a crossbow in Ky and barely escaped with my Life ( my perspective changed in many ways that day)
October 14th = My buddy drives me to a pasture (barely able to walk and unbeknownst to my wife)and runs a 20#5oz gobbler to me with his dog, bear
October 26th = return to Ky (still recovering and weak) and find a field I can walk to, full of gobblers and bag a nice last spring's jake
December 6th = return to ky for second season and fill my last gun tag with a plump male poult and call one for my buddy

December 7th = contemplating just how blessed I am with an awesome God, family and good friends and on top of that plenty  of turkey in the freezer.....does life get any better?
