After several trips out with me to both hunt and photograph, Mary decided she was ready to pull the trigger on her own. This is her 21 lb Merriams and her first bird

It was fun. I've been somewhat pleasantly surprised to hear her go on about it.
 
We watched a turkey show on TV after we got home from the hunt and she commented that it was the first time she watched one that she wished she could be there. She mostly used to just roll her eyes when she came into the room and saw me watching them.
 
She understand what it's all about now for sure.

The first time I went out there I can't even describe how badly I wanted one of those birds. It was the same the first trip to Texas.
 
I had watched people hunt them on tv and  I wanted to get my hands on one more than anything in the world.
 
Turkey hunting anywhere for any species can be tough at times but hunting these birds is different experience compared to Easterns and you should figure out a way to make a trip for these birds.
 
The Merriams without a doubt is my favorite species to hunt both because of the beauty of the bird and the land they inhabit.
 
Merriams often provide you with the type of hunt that all turkey hunters desire. The terrain often lets you move on them and be more aggressive and mu excperinece has been that the birds are more responsive to the call and gobble more including afternoons wher Easterns can be quieter.
 
Even when they're henned up there are ways to approach them. It can be action packed and rewarding.
 
My advice is to go for it and start creating a hunting slush fund.
