i arrived at my favorite parking lot as it was getting light . birds gobbling in all directions from there this morning. many were jakes . so i loaded the .223 , stuffed my pockets with grub and some water , strapped my cushion to my waist and headed for the hills . once i reached the top of the break , i stood quietly for 15-20 minutes just listening. the groups of birds i had heard earlier had shut down the gobbling but occassionally i could hear a gobbler yelping way down the holler . i stayed on top of the break in order to hear from both sides of the ridge . stopped twice in my trek out the ridge just to sit on a log and listen . decided to circle my way back toward the truck around 10:30 , which took me through a new part of the area , new to me anyhow. then this gobbler started up . sometimes it sounded like there were two . not sure if they got started by the crows and just continued on after the crows left , ,,,at any rate , the bird doing most ,if not all the gobbling was still going at it at 11:00. i plan on being close to that same area next saturday around the same time ,,,maybe he'll show a pattern of late morning gobbling.
