Although unemployment is at a 22-year high in Alabama, this year the state will not have one of its top events to recruit new industries. The Alabama Governor's One-Shot Turkey Hunt, a favorite of economic developers and their guests, has fallen victim to the economy this year.
The event is on a one-year sabbatical because of the soft economy. Officials at the Alabama Department of Conservation said they canceled the event for 2009 because of fears sponsors would not participate.
Barnett Lawley, the state's conservation commissioner, said the decision to cancel the event, at least for one year, was not easy but was the only choice.
"We are just going through tough economic times," he said. "We thought about the bind our sponsors are in."
