One of the best weekends ever

Postby ticklishtompro » April 29th, 2014, 10:22 pm

This past weekend was my first turkey tag of the season. I looked forward to it as always. My season would not go as planned though, as often times happens. My oldest daughter was 8 1/2 months pregnant, and at the beginning of the week we were joking around as to when the baby would come. I asked her to please wait till after turkey season was done, as this would be my first grandson and then I would have more time. She asked when that was and I replied May 27 would work for me. Now her due date was May 10, so that really didn't go over so well.
Wednesday was the first official day of my tag, but I knew I wouldn't be able to hit the woods till Friday as I had taken the day off to hunt. Well, again plans change. She went to the doctor and they in turn sent her straight to the hospital. Her blood pressure was way to high and the only way to correct that was to induce. They didn't induce until Thursday night. Friday morning I hit the woods with a friend and his wife. She has never shot a gobbler, so that was my mission. The first part of the morning was uneventful. A little later we tried a different property and were about 20 yards away from a triple. So close yet so far. After that I had to quit hunting and pick up my other daughter and go spend some time at the hospital. I went out for about 2 hours that afternoon and saw 2 hens and 8 deer, and a fox.
I slept with one eye open that night as I knew my daughter was getting close to delivering. But as the alarm went off at 3:30am, still no baby so hunting I went. We had some good action with a gobbler that stayed on the roost in our sight for over an hour after most of the rest of them hit the ground. He finally flew down, but never came in for a shot.
During this time my phone went off and I got the call that I had a new grandson. Luke was born at 5:07am. We came out of the woods by 8am and headed to the hospital to meet him. Never went out hunting again that day.
Sunday I planned on hunting hard now that Luke had come, but the weather forecast was not looking good for the afternoon, so I figured we had to get it done in the morning. I walked out in the morning and it was raining and windier than I thought it would be. I was worried the birds wouldn't talk much. I was wrong. We had at least 8 different gobblers gobbling off the roost. At least 4 of them were within 100 yards. They had a lot of hens, but by 7:30 we got a lone gobbler to wonder in and I shot him at 30 steps. Then we notice he has 2 beards. The one isn't much, but none the less my first double bearded bird.
Next tag starts in 2 weeks, don't know how that one can top this weekend, but hey I will give it a try.

Good bird, but what about a pic of your grandson? If your wife or daughter ever look on this site and there isn't one, somebody is in a whole lotta trouble LOL!
