Choke/shot for Remington 870

Postby BigTone » September 10th, 2013, 6:23 pm

Hey folks, I'm new to turkey hunting and could use your advice. I'm going to get a Remington 870 and most come with a modified rem. choke or a full choke...is there something better for turkey? I have read that you also need to match the choke with the shot to get a nice pattern but I just don' t have the money to experiment with chokes and boxes of shells. Can anyone help out a newbie? Thanks for the help and I'm sure i'll be chatting with you all much more in the near future! Thanks, ~Anthony

Many of the aftermarket chokes will give a little better performance than the full choke that comes with the 870, but the only way to be sure is to test some of the aftermarket chokes. If you look on the forums you can get a good idea what works good on the 870 and the opinions will be varied. If funds are limited I would start with the full choke that came with the gun. If paterned right it will be adequate to kill a turkey out to 40 yards. Proper sight in and pattern may be more or as important as the type of choke. The other consideration is the type of shell shot that you will be using. The Hevi Shot Blend and Hevi #7 seem to be popular. Good luck.

Before I got my browning 10 gauge, I killed my birds with an 870 and I had a comp-n-choke xxx full at .655 diameter and I used federal premium flight control #4 and #5. I had great patterns and good success in the field. I love a Remington 870!!!
