I wasn't able to go hunting yesterday but I went this morning and setup close to where I saw the gobbler flew up the day before. It was raining when I first entered the woods but quit after a few minutes. Like I always do when I setup that morning I see something that looked like a bird in the tree. When the daylight starts lighting up a little a noticed it wasn't but I need notice a bird right in front of me at 20 yards. I slowly put my gun on my knee and ready to stay still. As I'm watching the bird I notice it is a hen after she starts moving around. Then I notice another bird in the same tree and its a young jake.
Its about 7 o'clock, and the sun is up and the birds are not saying a word? Then I notice three more birds in another tree at my 11 o'clock position. By this time my butt is hurting me from not moving and I have a mosquito buzzing by my ear and plucking my nerves. I'm ready for something to happen. The birds finally start doing some soft tree yelping. Then out of nowhere here comes a bird flying right at me from my 2 o'clock and lands no more than 10 yards from me. Its a mature gobbler!
When he lands he takes a couple of steps away from me and stops. I slowly turn my gun towards him and BOOM, ballgame. Birds go in every direction but I didn't really notice what they are were since I got what I came for.
My daughter asked me to get her a big gobbler and I'm happy that I was able to succeed for her. I sent a picture of it to my wife and she was able to show her before she went to school and she was ecstatic. That there made my day. The bird weighed about 21 lbs, 10.25" beard, 1 1/16" spurs.
