help with my nova

Postby turkeygetter472 » July 5th, 2013, 1:52 pm

i bought a used benelli nova with a 28 in barrel and an undertaker choke. it patterns very good out to 30 yards but after that point, the pattern falls apart. i am shooting winchester 3.5 in supreme turkey loads in #5. i am really looking for some recomendations for ammo that will hold a decent pattern out to 40 yards. my choke is a .665. thanks in advance.

The local gun shop used to sell shells by the each so we didn't end up spending a ton trying to figure out which load will pattern best. If your local gun shop doesn't offer shells by the each, maybe you could swap/purchase some shells from a few friends.

I had the nova when I first started turkey hunting and used the same ammo but with a Kicks Gobblin Thunder .660 or .670. It shot just a little high. A buddy of mine uses either the jelly head or the undertaker with fiochi 3.5" shells and loves the combination. If you want me to find out for sure let me know and I can find out.

I would love to find out for sure. figuring out the perfect combo can get expensive very quickly.

I shoot a Benelli SBE II that does great with a TruGlo SSX .643 choke and 3 inch Hevi #6s. It is remarkable how well that pattern holds together for how far. I used to shoot a Kicks .655 with 3 inch Winchester Supreme #6s. The Hevi shot through the TruGlo .643 choke patterns as good or better at 40 yards than my Kicks did with lead #6s at 30 yards. The Hevi shot is much more expensive than lead, but it has greater density than equal size lead shot, so smaller #6 pellets have greater knockdown power at greater distance than #5 lead does. More pellets per shell and smaller diameter really helps throw tight patterns at distance.

You may not need a 3.5 inch shell either. My SBE patterns 3 inch better than 3.5 inch shells, even with lead.

I hope this helps.

thanks Jim for all the information. I know this is a lot to ask since these shells are so expensive but do you think you could send me just one so I could see how it patterns, I could pay you for it if you want. I just don't want to buy a whole box and it not pattern well. thanks again

Where do you live? If you're close by here (NC), I'll meet you to go shooting.

What part of KY? I'm in Logan County. I still have my kicks choke if you want to try it. My buddy got back with me and he uses a promos tight wad.
