When building a box call, you'll want to look for as straight a grain as possible, and for a wood that has a tight grain in it,for the best sound for the box. This is a piece of 3" x 9" x 12" Walnut. I'm cutting the box out of the bottom right side of this block, I'll cut the top section off when I cut it to the correct height I need, because near the top the grain starts to change angles, you want the grain in the box as horizontal as you can get it.
