Tagged out Ohio

Postby eggshell » April 23rd, 2013, 1:47 pm

well the Ohio season was short lived for open tags, but hey that's a good thing. At least the frustrations of Kentucky didn't follow me home. My number one turkey hunting buddy went along with me this morning. He an d his wife hunted opening day together and she tagged a nice 20Lb three year old, so we teamed up this morning. Birds gobbled fairly well on the roost, but slowed quickly after fly down. We set up on a group of birds early that went to hens, but planned on a mid morning return to them. I set up on a little ridge we'd heard a gobble off from and found out that is was home range to a pack of 5-7 jakes, they all got a free pass. We then headed to a field I saw a bird in yesterday and Saturday while scouting. He was not in the field, but I knew which way he came to the field from and slipped to a break of the hill and threw a sharp series of yelps and GGOOOBBBBLLLEE he cut me off. We sat down quick and after a few minutes I made a soft call, but got no response. About two minutes later I hear spitting and drumming and figure out where it's coming from just in time to position my gun. Old boss tom came strutting right down the gun barrel I held off shooting waiting on my buddy, but he never shoots. Finally the bird is staring me down at 15 steps and decided that bump by that tree is not a good thing. He turns to walk away, but only get's about 3 steps and a load of number fives hits him square in the back of the head...that fast I'm tagged out. I turn to my buddy who sat about 20 feet from me and asked why he never shot, I had told him the first shot was his unless something went wrong. The bird had stopped dead behind a dead stump for him and he could not shoot. So I pack old long beard back to the truck and stash him and my gun and head back to my buddy on a side ridge. We spend the next two hours slowly working ridges and short set ups and listen and wait. We get one courtesy gobble from across a valley and that is it. at 10:00 Am we decide it's time to head back to the henned up gobblers. we move through and then decide to cut up hill towards the jake ridge, but I tell John I'll make one more call series, a soft run of yelps and a gobble comes thundering back from behind us; how did we walk past that bird. We drop like rocks and soon as we're situated I call real soft and GGOOOOOBBBBBLE right out of sight. The next thing I see is John adjusting his gun and tucking down on the stock and boom, bird number two of the day is flopping. My Bird weighed 22.5 lbs, 10.5 inch beard and 1 3/8 and a 1 1/4 in spurs. That makes probably my finest back to back birds I've ever taken with yesterday's being 23.5 lbs, 11.5" beard and 1.5" spurs.

WOW! That sounds like an awesome day in the turkey woods. Those are two great turkeys you harvested in back to back days. Congratulations.
