Just Gone

Postby Cut N Run » March 24th, 2013, 9:57 pm

I went to one of my hunting spots today hoping to scout some and found it scalped...clear cut. They didn't leave a twig. It is a small spot, but it held turkeys...until now. It looked great a few weeks ago.

Disappointed.

Dang, that's the second place you've lost. The first was because they burned it off, and now they clear cut another one. Sorry to hear that, Jim.

Hate to hear that Jim. I have always hated a clear cut.
Is it turkey season yet?

That is until they start to grow back, then it's real fun to hunt

Dang-

You've got rotten hunter's luck. If I recall, burned property, people and horses, loose dogs, hunters sneaking in from the other way and now logging.

Lets not forget your super flakey, wishy washy landowner and your hernia tribulations.

Just like me, YOU are due for some good luck my friend. I admire your gumption and positive attitude!

Dang Jim that sucks! I believe the turkey gods will start smiling on you as they have kicked you enough already.

That does suck. Many of my favorite turkey woods around here have been clear cut by WDNR to increase the deer herd?! (there are already so many deer that there in no limit)
Generally speaking large clear cuts are bad for turkeys and their habitat needs. In hardwood areas they'll not grow back in our lifetimes making the turkey hunting loss to us permanent.
Good luck finding a new turkey woods.

Around here a clear cut makes a new saw briar field. There is no resaon to leave the younger trees and letting them mture. A clear cut is just pure greed.

The property next to my honey hole got cleared cut a couple of years ago. That place is nothing but a stinking briar patch now and totally screwed up how the turkeys move through the area. I might also need to added that the butt head that did the clear just had to start doing it on opening day. Then stopped cutting the day after the season ended.  That year was the only year I ate tag soup.

They've already got things lined up for that land to be replanted in Loblolly Pines soon. That means in another 8-10 years it ought to just be starting to happen for turkeys again. It wasn't old growth timber to start with, but I hate to lose any spot. I'll need to go out and score two new places to make up for the one I lost. I know there's a hidden gem out there somewhere that nobody hunts. I just haven't found it yet.
