which wood for striker?

I'm gonna be ordering a couple dowels from customsawing and was wondering which woods would you get for a crystal surface?

It depends on what sound your trying to get out of the call? Your denser woods will give you more rasp and a sharper break in the rollover, your softer woods give exactly that a softer sounding call.
Depending on what woods they have and what sound your looking for, would help answer your question?

Well to be honest i'd like to have all the bases covered from young hen to old hen. Plus tom and jake. Is this possible?

Yes it is, IF the call is capable of doing it? If the call has good chattery rasp in it you should be able to get all the birds your looking for out of it.

Young High Pitched= locust, cherry, cedar
Old Hen= purpleheart, hickory, rosewood, bloodwood, osage, walnut
Gobs n jakes= purpleheart, rosewood, bocote, bubinga, acrylic

Tops Walnut or laminate

If you got the Walnut tops and Purpleheart, Locust, Hickory, Rosewood pegs, you should have it covered.

Thanks I have the rosewood and I like the way it sounds. Now i'll have to get the purpleheart, locust, and hickory. What about carbon, aluminum, and acrylic

The acrylic is probably the best of the three, it's easier to play with, carbon has a better sound but they are fussy.

If you ever get a chance to get an African Blackwood peg, that's what I prefer for gobblers. It's a go too striker for gobblers. It produces a real high pitch start that drops off into a deep raspy yelp and raspy clucks and cutts.

Scott, do you ever mess with Dogwood or Persimmon for strikers? I've got a few logs of each that have been drying for 3-4 years now.

I've used both those woods for strikers, but haven't use them much. They produce a sound I just I don't use much, hunting public land high pressured birds, I prefer a real high pitch or a raspy sounding striker. That said, they do make a good sounding striker for glass or slate.
