Conner Leslies' National 1st Place Decorative Box Call

Postby hoosierhunter » February 24th, 2009, 3:41 pm

What you are seeing is the box call that Conner Leslie entered into the Decorative one piece natural wood, box calls category, in Nashville tn. this past weekend. It is made of Spalted Tiger Maple and it has several turkeys in it. Spalted Maple is not so rare, Tiger Maple is and even more so if it is spalted and still retains the tiger striping. As a matter of fact haven't found anyone yet that has ever seen it. I am very proud of him.
The other calls you see are the second and third place finishers, Bob Brenner and Gary Campanie, master callmakers of national prominence. I bought thier calls at auction for Conner so he would always have a reminder of his accomplishment.

Good lookin piece of wood there, looks like the kiln stopped the spalt though. I didn't say it didn't exist, or didn't mean to, just said it was very rare especially in a box call with as much spalt as what Conners call had. You gonna make a box call out of that ?

No kiln was used to dry the wood, just cut green and air dried. I congratulate mr. Leslies on his win at the Nationals. but I think what you are looking at in the call are bark inclusions (ingrown bark) in the wood not spalt. It made a very nice call!!!!
