I try to set up so that a bird is pretty much in the comfort zone when he gets clear. For me, that's the 25 to 40 yard range. Closer than that, (and I have killed some at 8-12 steps) the chance of a miss is greater. I have killed birds out near the 50 yard mark and have the confidence in my set up that I can do that if necesary but that is a last resort. I want them all to pose, neck extended at 27.5 yards and hold the pose long enough for my heart to settle a little. [;)]
