do turkeys spit n drum in the fall or is that reserved for the springtime?

I was sitting out near a corn edge today trying to see where the birds are at right now and after a few soft yelps on the slate i couldve sworn i heard drummin. i answered back and heard something move in 3 different directions. Maybe i just have turkey fever from waiting all summer and im hearing things but what do you veteran hunters think? I did end up finding some scratchings and a homely looking tailfeather later but never saw any birds

Absolutely they do. They also gobble quite frequently. It is all part of them establishing their pecking order making it a very exciting time to hunt.

ah ok thanks! it did get my heart pumping! i'll have to bring my decoys along for the opener this weekend then

Oh, I forgot to mention they also strut and fight a lot so be ready to do aggressive gobbler talk including fighting purrs. If you are after fall gobblers forget the hen talk just challenge the gobbler's top tom status.

I killed these 3 fall gobblers using a slate held between my knees and 2 strikers simultaneously to do fighting purrs. 6 of them came in gobbling and fighting each other. At each shot equaling one dead tom, the survivors flew off across the valley (about a quarter mile) and I called them back twice more to kill the other 2. In WI our daily limit is the number permits in our pockets.

Those are some beautiful birds! I never would have thought to use 2 strikers i'll have practice that. theres plenty of gobblers to be had here i love wi. thank you for the advice!

i've never actually heard drumming in the fall, but have seen strutting, gobbling, fighting, posturing by gobbler groups on occasion, i always feel like i've witnessed something extra special when i do.....
