Not sure when exactly the buzzer sounds today 5/22 the last day of Wisconsin's 2012 spring season. But some time between sunrise and sunset it sounds.
There were no turkeys sounds anywhere, not even any distant ones I could detect, the crows and owls were very subdued; I trolled a few ridges and valleys that usually hold turkeys--nothing but quiet. Fall hunting has taught me the turkeys are still there and with all the thick foliage they are easy to walk right past. So the only option was to setup in a likely spot and call. I did for an hour with the squirms of doubt closing in on the edges of my mind, thoughts started wandering to the upcoming fall season how happy Vic will be to; instead of begging/praying to go with.
It has been a great spring season so I pack my calls into my vest, squirms and doubts got the best of me, time to call it a season. A deer approaches quickly from across the field, the young buck stops 20 paces from me. What the heck I'll take time to take his picture......
Movement out on the horizon distracts my eyes, its a turkey out wandering around, dang calls are in my vest, can't move much, fish the DoRal out, it only clucks well but the turkey turns and starts for my position. It is just a hen, I decide to play with her and cluck each time she looks away. More movement to the right, another hen and a sight to behold a strutter-way out of range though. More clucks each time the turkeys are not looking, they begin to purposefully close the distance and the fourth turkey is a tom who never struts.
Of course the strutter looked bigger and at 20 yards in an open plowed field the deal is done.
25 lbs with 12.5" beard, no spur on one leg and 1/2" broken on the second.
Dang was I lucky the deer showed up or I would have done something I never do; quit early.
Any other buzzer birds? Or stories?
