Turkey's respond to owl call.

Postby willcfish » May 21st, 2012, 7:51 pm

I know my owl calling is pretty pathetic but it's a real charge to get them to respond several times.

I think the owl calls out of my mouth sound better than store bought ones I've used for the most part. The Hootin' Stick I bought does sound pretty good though. I suppose the best part about being able to use my own voice is I always have it with me and I don't need to worry about it taking up room in my vest.

I've not found a call that sounds better when I blow it than what I can do with my mouth, so I don't use an owl call.

I agree most owl calls arn't that good. I have a very old Crow call that was my father in laws that works pretty good.

Any owl call sounds better than my natural voice LOL :D A couple of years ago I got almost immediate response from real owls. Then a gobbler responded to them. They hooted and gobbled at each other until after fly down. I use the Primos call. My son can run a reed type pretty good.

I use my voice. You don't have to be all that accurate on tone, so long as you do right on the cadence. I can do it well enough to get barred owls pissed off at each other-- that's when the real fun begins. Once you get the owls in on it, then they honk off their neighbors and so on. One time I did that up in Northern Ontario, and I swear I must have had every bird above the 45th parallel sounding off.

Generally, I only owl early in the year, when I'm trying to get turkeys to gobble during my scouting. By the time season starts, I have the birds pretty well patterned, and let the ambient sources do the work. If you're patient, the crows, owls, woodpeckers, etc. get the gobblers going plenty.
