2014 Hatch

Postby WillowRidgeCalls » June 14th, 2014, 8:46 am

Anyone seeing any youngins yet? I've been seeing quite a few hens in the fields and ditches, but I haven't seen any little ones with them yet.

Poults made their first appearance around here during the 5th season. The insect population is high so they have, and have had plenty of high protein. Vic has been pointing them out to me or I would not be aware of many of them due to the lush thick understory growth. Optimism about a fabulous fall hunt is building. In addition to lots of adult toms it's looking like there will very good numbers of birds of the year.
June 13th was the first day I heard no gobbling.
come on fall!

unit 4. Since then I've been seeing poults in 1&3. Last week on the way home from Milwaukee I stopped off to hike some public areas in eastern unit 3 and found 5 different broods with 6-8 poults each. All of those poults could fly.

Saw a hen yesterday morning that had 2 really light colored poults with her, almost a blonde color. The rest of her poults were the normal poult colored, but these 2 really stuck out. There has been a white phase gobbler in that area that's been seen quite a few times. I would of thought the color phase wouldn't show until they had their primary feathers? These poults were about the size of a hen pheasant, so they were getting quite big. It'll be interesting to see if they are a color phased bird?
