Different Long Box

Thought I'd try something different in a long box. This one is Cedar over Cedar/Catolpa, with a Purpleheart bottom. It has a great 2 tone sound out of each side.

Great looking longbox Scott not sure about the handle I could invision breaking it with rough use.

It is a little thinner than what I intended it to be, but being purpleheart it a lot stronger then it looks. When I first cut it out I thought, you dumby that's way to thin. So I gave it a good test, flipping it through the air end over end on the driveway and couldn't get it to break, so I finished it off and tuned it. I wanted something that looked a little different, and since I don't do checkering I tried a different design?

I like the design a lot and if you tested it I am sure it will hold up I guess I was just being skeptical since that is different than anything I have ever seen.

Actually that design works pretty nice. You can slip a finger into it and pinch it lightly to hold the call solid without putting a lot of preasure on it.

Is the Catolpa softer than butternut?  A friend made some stuff out of it and he had trouble with fuzz.  I told him to wet it down and then pass it over a HOT burner on a stove then sand.  Repeat until there are no more wiskers.  Worked like a charm.  Nice looking call.  The cedar side should scream.  Could you loop a couple of rubber bands through the finger hole and make it a gobble box?

Yes the Catolpa is softer, but this piece was good and firm no fuzz at all. It was a piece of the heartwood. I think the further you get to the outside the more fuzz you get.

Great looking call but I agree that the handle could be an issue if dropped in the woods. Thanks for posting. I love the sound of a good longbox.

That's a good lookin' call Scott . I don't know that much about the differences between the short and the long , but the long is very appealing to the eye .
