Unfinished call?

I bought an unassembled, unfinished pot, it's a zebra wood slate. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best finish to put on it? Is the spray varnish okay to use? The wood is beautiful and I get to make it "mine" I just don't want to ruin it. Anything I need to be cautious of?

I like Deft finishes, for the fact that they dry fast and last. The biggest thing to watch with spray finishes is, make sure you put thin coats on and sand between eack coat.
