Well, this bird has been a long time comin, and is the culmination of several years of hard work. This is the redhead (jake) that I took with my longbow and wooden arrows with real turkey feather fletching. The bow was custom made for myself and is 75lbs. at 30". I was in Mi. on the last weekend of season and the birds had been called to so much, that calling was only a warning to the birds. I believe they had already began thier Summer/Fall pattern as the flock that this bird came from started out at 4 gobbs and 7 Jakes. When I called the gobbers took notice and began moving off and the jakes reluctantly began following. I knew that if I was goin to get a bird with my long bow I would have to manuever ahead and get in position for a bushwack. I began a 2000 yd. half circle that should've have brought me to where I thought they would be leaving the field by some pines, but I was not sure I would get there in time. When I arrived, I knelt by pine to catch my breath, hit my inhaler, (COPD), and have a look out from behind my hidey hole. They were already there ! 25 more feet and the first bird would be at 25 yds. Here they come, 1jake, 2jake, 3jake, 4jake, 5jake, 6jake, 7 jake, and.....nothin ! the Longbeards must have already passed before I was in position and the Jakes were just laggin behind. Should I shoot a jake or not ? Duh ! Longbow ! Of course ! One good putt at half draw and..........WHACKO ! The arrow busted both wings and he took off runnin and falling all over himself while tryin to do so. Tried to jump up and fly but just landed on his side doin doughnuts. My first longbow turkey kill. Now thats ole school ! That's traditional !I guess now I'm a Liver Eatin Johnson ! SPRING 2009- 5-GOBBLERS,1-JAKE [:)][:D][:)][:D][:)][:D][8D][8D][8D]
GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS, AND STAY SAFE !
