South Carolina bird taken on 4.01.2010

Postby SC_Hunter » April 1st, 2010, 10:08 am

arrived to the place I had planned on hunting all week with no sound from a bird. Heard others couple hundred yards away, but said the hell with it and set up right were I was since it was close to time for them to fly down. gave out some yelps and some cutts and two gobbled down in the swampy bottom. called a good bit until I thought they were off the roost. one gobbled at 80 yards, so I hit the call, set it down and got the gun up. Im sitting on the down sloping other side of a hill that is on a ridge looking down into the swamp. I see him coming at 25-30 yards, but only had a shot at his head because the body was covered by the hill. he goes past me and gobbles trying to find the hen. I call real softly and quietly seeing if he would commit to coming back. I turn and look and two more were following his same path. The last one was a long beard so I figure that the one leading the two of them was as well and decided I would shoot him once he poped out on the other side of a tree. I was wrong. When I went to retrieve my earned reward, it wasnt the long beard I had wished, but a jake. It has eatin me up all day because I am not for shooting jakes. did hear some others ima chase around while on spring break.

I agree exactly with what craig said. A successful hunt none the less.
