Thanks Turkeybuster. I setup on a longbeard this morning i heard gobbling. Called him in but he hung up on a logging road and just strutted there all by himself. He would'nt leave the road to come to me, so I watched him from about a hundred yards away for about 45 min then he walked off. tThat bird gobbled from 610 am till 800 am. I will get in early in the morning and setup a decoy on that logging road. Hopefully he will play along. Here in bama we have a limit of 5 gobblers per season.
Well I got out to the woods this morning before daylight in hopes of taking the paintbrush I watched strut yesterday morning. As luck would have it, not a single gobble this morning and no sign of him. Turkey Hunting 101 - don't expect things to be the same as the day prior. Not sure why not one turkey gobbled but, it sure was a beautiful morning. Taking my 9 yr old in the morning with me, ya'll say a prayer or two, we're going after his first longbeard. Will let you know how we did.
Sweet!! Nothing like roosting a bird, then having somebody spook it, but still salvaging the hunt. awesome man. Wish I could hunt in alabama. i dont have a good place to hunt in the spring up here in NY, so spring season is fun listening to all the turkeys gobble, but there all on other properties. Need to try and get permission. Nice job though.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]
Hunt for thunder chickens for months at a time...you know that's right
I slipped into an area on Fort Rucker, here in Alabama this morning at 530 to listen for one of those longbeards. Heard a faint gobble some distance off and waited to see if any were closer. I made a few soft yelps and about a min later I heard a turkey clucking close by so I sat down by the closest tree. After ten min, no turkey so I made another couple of soft yelps and I heard a gobble a little closer this time. I talked to him for an hour. At 730 and after moving 3 times I finally got him within 100 yards. I watched him strut on a ridge through the woods. I softly yelped and clucked and worked him for 30 min before he commited. He walked up within 15 yards of me, gobbling and strutting but, I could'nt get my gun around the tree I was behind until he stepped behind a pine tree. Mr. 835 sent him to say hi to Elvis with a 3.5 Hevi 4x5x7 at 15 yards. 19 pounds, 9.5 inch beard, and 1 inch spurs. Well, I got my limit, this morning made number 5. We are allowed 5 gobblers here in Alabama. This was a very good season.
Congrats Dewey to you and Carson. Great bird. Great job in sticking with it to close the deal so Carson could put the smack down on a good looking bird.
