WV 4/25/2011 opening day
I was fortunate enough to get the invite to attend turkey camp for a week in WV...................What a week it was!
Buddy and I arrived at camp 2 days before the opener so that gave us time to unwind enjoy some great company and of course SCOUT. We slept in on Saturday and decided to get up early on Sunday to go and listen and look for birds. My buddy has spent a few springs at this camp and he was kind enough to show me some great spots. Needless to say we were onto the birds the first spot we checked. W had a plan for opening morning. We woke up to pouring rain but it was kind enough to quit just in time for us to get in the woods and set up. Our first setup didnt produce any birds but we knew they were there because of all the gobbling going on around us. We heard a bird on the opposite ridge so we packed up and started that way. when we crossed the fence a bird gobbled and he sounded close so we reset in the pasture and waited. My buddy decided to set up on the tractor road that ran through the pasture and I set up on a side hill facing the opposite direction. After a standoff with a cow a hen worked her way to my right and passed at about 10 yards...........All of a sudden a barrage of gobbles came from just over the rise in front of me and they are getting closer................As my buddy tries a few clucks a red head pops up over the rise and BOOOOOOMMMMMMM..............47 yard shot puts the gobblers beak in the dirt!!!!!
