Winchester Double X Magnum Box Info

Postby stankyolgobbler » March 9th, 2012, 6:22 pm

I was going to pick up a regular box of 3 1/2" Winchester Supreme Double X Magnum Turkey Loads yesterday. I decided to stop in at a pawn shop on the way and while browsing their guns and ammo I saw a box of Winchester (NOT SUPREME) Double X Magnum Turkey Loads.....but not just any box. I asked to see them and they were the exact same size that I shoot. (3 1/2" 2 1/4 oz. 6 Shot) They were at a great price so I purchased them. The box is in Treebark Camoflauge, it is sponsored by the NWTF, and has a return label for an NWTF membership....a $20 membership!?!?

Here are some pictures of the box. I know the (Supreme Version) shell quite well since I have used them before, and quite successfully. But if you have any information on this box and load like when it was made, if you've seen it before, or if you've even heard of it, please share. I'm just curious about them.

I have that same type box with the form to join the NWTF inside the lid too. However the load is Double X Magnum, 12 gauge, 3 inch, 2oz, #5 shot.

The price is still on the box and I bought them for $7.75. :D

Sorry I can't help you on when it was made though...I can't remember when I bought them either. Probably sometime in the mid to late 90's?

A few years back, Jay Langston did an article for T & TH on the evolution of the dedicated turkey load. I've got all of my back copies so I'll see if I can find it and report back.

Just off the top I'd say those are from around 1993.

I have the article as well, I believe it was in the Annual Gear Issue.. I believe its stated that Winchester made the first Buffered load in which they called it Grex..

Some of those old lead loads will outpattern todays lead loads.

Somewhere on that box is a lot number and maybe a date code. All ammo has it that I know of. That is in case something has gone wrong in the loading process. When I buy slugs I search the codes to make sure all the boxes have the same code. Ask NWTF or Winchester if the offer is still valid.

Nice patterns. That'll work!

I remember those boxes. I still have a few 2 & 3/4 inch loads that came in one, but the box is long gone. They have slick red hulls, not like the grooved ones of today.

Rooting around looking for ammo made me realize that I don't need to buy more anytime soon. Good thing I ordered more last week.
