On the morning of 04/09/08 I killed this turkey in South Georgia on my first ever turkey hunt with the help of my friend Hansell Watt (he is obviously a great guide). Not only did the hunt take less than 20 minutes, the bird had 1 1/4 inch spurs with a 12 1/4 inch beard. But that was not the most interesting fact. When we took this to the taxidermist, he stated that this bird was a rare black phase turkey (NWTF website verifies that this is an actual color phase). He had never seen one of these in all of his years of turkey hunting and taxidermy. I have not seen this coloration or even ever heard of it. The wings on this bird were totally black like a crow with no stripes or coloration. Has anyone ever seen this?
