Yesterday May 1st was my dad's birthday and the 2nd day of our season here in Wisconsin. I roosted some birds the night before and the one bird was gobbling like crazy. So we got up at 4:30 on Thursday and headed for the woods. At first nothing gobbled and I was kind of worried. However, I hit my crow call and there he was maybe 150 yards away. He was double and triple gobbling. The bad news was there were 2 hens roosted only 75 yards from us and we could see them. They called to him, I called to him and so on. Finally the hens flew down into the valley. Now the moment came. Would he go down into the valley or stay up on top on the field. Luckily he stayed on top and strutted and drummed right into our decoy. My dad took him at 43 yards at 5:55 A.M. It was awesome! I had called in my dad's first turkey on his birthday! The 3 year old weighed 25 pounds and had 2 beards-10 and 9 inches. Also, he had only 1 spur which was 1 1/4 inch. It was truly an amazing morning for us both. Finally roosted is roasted!
