I am still in the run to the downed bird category. While I agree, running with a loaded gun is not safe, military personnel do it all the time. I run to the bird and place my Rocky boot right on his skull and apply steady pressure until the flopping stops. I have read too many stories about birds regaining their feet and running or flying off. One story told of a hunter that carried his bird to the management area check-in station and the bird flew off when the surprised hunter open the trunk of the car to show the Ranger.
Smash his skull and that won't happen. In this day of $3 shotshells, I'm not wasting another shell.
