835 Ulti Mag

Postby trkynut54 » February 1st, 2009, 4:01 am

I've heard alot of good reports on this shotgun so I bought one the other day. I got it for a good price. Almost like new, only had 8 shots out of it. $250.00. I put my Mossberg 500 on the rack to give it a rest for awhile, it's been good to me over the years. Shot lots of turkeys with it. I've had it 30+ years. Now all I have to do is wait til this weather breaks so I can pattern this new one.

Congratulations! The 835 is a very reliable shotgun and is used by very many hunters. It just works to kill turkeys. I'd recommend that you "deep clean" that barrel/choke before you pattern it. I've had many readers who have improved patterns dramatically with just a good cleaning.

If yours has the factory turkey choke, I'd try it before even considering another turkey choke. Many times they work quite well and you don't need anything else.

http://allaboutshooting.com/article_info.php?articles_id=242 will get you to an article about "deep cleaning". It's a process that just works.

I'd also recommend that you consider using 3" shells with that gun even though it chambers 3.5" shell. Many times, the 3" shells pattern better, they cost less and they certainly kick a lot less.

Good luck in the spring.

Thanks,
Clark

Thanks for the tips. I will be using 3" shells out of it. The choke tube that came with it is the Ulti Mag turkey choke so I won't be looking for any others. I checked on Mossbergs website and that's the tightest one.

The other one I have, the 500, I have it set up with a 28 in barrel, XX full choke tube from Mossberg. I shoot Federal Premium 3"  #6 shot copper plated bb's and can kill a turkey up to 40 yards plus a bit farther.

I'm going to try the Federals out of this 835 and see how they pattern.

That's my weapon too.  Paid a little over $400.00 for it brand new, so yeah, you got a steal at $250.00 for slightly used.  You'll love the thumbhole grip and the open look of the fiber optic sights.  I busted my arse on a steep creek bank and busted my rear sight as well.  I bought an aftermarket set of sights from tru-glo but I just didn't like them as much.  Took my original rear sight to a gunsmith and he fixed it with a 2 minute job of bradding it up.

The 835 is a little heavier than what I'd like, but between the short barrel and the comfortable grip, I'm happy with it.

I have a 835 and have shot several others, I've never seen one that did not shoot well. I have .670 Comp-n-Choke in mine ,but definately give the factory choke a try probably be more than adequate.

Chikin, Thinking of purchasing a comp-n- choke for my 835. How does it pattern in yours? What type of ammo are you shooting? I've heard that alot of people like shooting the 3" shell versus the 3 1/2 . Just curious looking for some testimony.. Thanks.

IMO these high priced chokes are overhyped, I spent my fair share of money on different brands over the years but like Clark said with that 835 the factory choke works as good as any.

If we are all shooting birds within 40 yards, the pattern these factory chokes throw will kill are bird with no problem.

My Mossberg 500 has a factory choke in it, a XX Full Choke, and can kill a turkey up to and beyond 40 yards.
