I understand the biologist say it's the lengthening of days that triggers breeding, but I'd really like to hear an explanation for why spring gobbler season starts as early as March 15th in the low country of South Carolina but not until May 1st in many colder climate areas.   Are the days really shorter in Nebraska or Wisconsin ?  I can tell you I saw a hen with poults by the 3rd week of April last year in Fairfield county, SC.

It's not the lengthening of the days, its the weather and instinct that bring on mating. If you will notice some seasons they start mating earlier than others and thats not because the day was longer than it was the year before lol...it has to do with instincts and the weather pattern for the area.

I don't know about what kicks 'em off, but I know that a cold snap after prolonged warm weather in Spring will shut 'em up more than usual.
