Spring Like weather in Feb

Postby tracebusta32 » February 10th, 2009, 10:22 am

By weeks end if the weather man has it right, we will have had over a weeks worth of 70 degree temps.

What kind of effect do you think this will have on the birds knowing winter is far from over?

The spring breeding season is brought on by the lenghtening days much like the rut for deer. I don't think the changes in weather affect them too much. I've been out in mid Feb. when it was 20 degrees and the gobblers would be wearing it out and I've been out when during the bluebird mornings and not heard a peep. You gotta love it. Warmth actually brings on the gobbling, which then brings on the mating season. This usually doesn't happen until around March or early May in some areas.

Breeding begins when the light in the day grows longer.  Adult toms can and do gobble during the year.  Spent  several cold mornings this fall and had turkeys gobbling each day.

It got about 60 here today chance of snow tommorow night. You southern guys have no idea how much weather in the north varies it dosen't effect there breeding or social structure at all. They know when its time to breed and when its just a warm front. Only effect it will have on them is they will be feeding like crazy now that most the snow is gone for now.

Breeding is based on actual amount of daylight...not weather...
